These 12 paintings were painted during the 12 holy Nights, December 25 – January 5, 2003, in an attempt to work with creative force as expressed in spirit and substance.

If the paintings are arranged in a vertical line they can be contemplated in a variety of ways:
Beginning with #1 in the center we can progress downward, #3 ,#5, #7, #9, #11, experiencing the creation of substance. click to see this progression

We can progress upwards, #2, #4, #6, #8, #10, #12, experiencing the creation of pneuma, a Greek word meaning wind or spirit. click to see this progression

Once we are familiar with these progressions we can contemplate the paintings in an alternating pattern, up and down, #’s 1- 12. This gives an alternating experience of contraction and expansion. click to see this progression

Formation of inner being: colors are completely in contact, there is no thought of inner space. There is a meeting but nothing has been born of it.

Inner space is conceived of but not apparent: there is the discomfort of potential not yet realized.

Descending movement: movement engenders feeling of inner space.

Inner space is created: it causes movement in response to itself.

Inner space is created.

Inner space is expanded into the round: environment is set in response.

Inner space begins to hold the possibility of materializing something.

Inner space expands out of the round: environment relaxes to allow expansion.

Space becomes inwardly warm, full of life.

Inner space expands toward periphery: breadth begins to be felt.

Warmth is compressed: substance is created.

Breadth is achieved: pneuma is created.
