Laura Summer was born in 1955 in New York City. She grew up in northern New Jersey and Southern California. In 1986 after 13 years working as a nurse and midwife she moved to central New York State to complete a painting training with Jennifer Thomson.
Since 1996, she has run Bright Wing Studio, an independent painting studio in Harlemville, N.Y. where she teaches adults and children. Her approach to color is influenced by Beppe Assenza, Rudolf Steiner and by Goethe’s color theory. In this type of painting the artist begins to converse with a progression of colors. Although a certain mood or direction may be intended, there is at the beginning of each painting no preconceived idea of what the final painting will look like. Through the slow building up of color the conversation leads to form, composition and finally to motif which may be representational or abstract.
Laura Summer’s work can be found in private collections in the United States and Europe, has been exhibited at The National Museum of Catholic Art and History in New York City, and is on permanent exhibition at the Sekem Community in Egypt. She is a founding member of The Experimental Art Collective.
Her work can be seen at the 345 Gallery in Hudson, NY and at the 78th Street Gallery in Sante Fe NM www.78thstreetgallery.com
"Currently in my work I am struggling with simplicity. How can I make color and form visible without unnecessary movement and surfaces. In the workshops I give I am working with translation. How can we move from poetry or movement to color and form, and then back. I believe that it is in the space between these media that we can learn to sense the spiritual world."
